Goal:

The goal of this session is to strengthen and increase the suppleness of the horse’s top line via an exercise of flexion and stretching. The rider will position her horse’s neck back and forth between the poll being at the highest and a position of a full stretch with the horse having the nose close to the ground.

Progress:

As Michel likes to explain, bringing a particular attention to the correct motion of the horse’s back, should be one of the rider’s top priority. We’re conscious about the fact that horses aren’t made to carry the weight of a rider on his back. Some conditioning work is essential if we want to keep them healthy and be able to get the most of their physical and mental ability. This conditioning consists, primarily of strengthening the muscle mass that is situated all along the spinal cord. Michel is using a very effective technique that he experimented during his long career as a high level international rider and horseman. This technique is based on the horse stretching his neck which consequently will stretch the entire top-line from the pole to the tail. This movement promotes also a work out of the abdominal muscles which are antagonistic muscles to the ones of the back.

Variant / Progression:

During this session, Michel is teaching Marine and Norton, a 9 year old gelding. They start with some flat work at the 3 gaits. Marine tries to alternate the position of the horse’s neck between a full stretch and a position where the poll is being the highest point. Michel explains to the rider, the proper position to let the movement go through without hindering her horse, leading to favour the correct execution of the exercise. Any kind of stiffness or tension from the rider, especially during the transitions between both neck position, can hinder the stretching movement and by consequence the positive outcome of the exercise for the horse.

After the exercise has been successfully executed on flat work, Marine has to practice it on a cavaletti set-up. Again, Michel insists on the rider’s position which is the key for a successful exercise. As soon as the rider holds onto the reins or interferes with the horse’s mouth to find a spot or to find her balance, the horse doesn’t have the capability anymore to perform the stretching movement desired. The grid has been set up in a manner as to limit the rider’s influence and therefore to allow the horse freedom of movements.

At the end of the exercise, we can notice that Norton is able to jump the cavalettis while stretching his neck with a round quiet and rhythmical canter.

Understand and focusing on how the horse’s back functions

Résumé listing:

Riders have to be aware that whatever the type of riding they practise, the motion of the horse’s top line is extremely important. We have to devote a special attention to this area, especially during the warm-up session.

Soin Description:

The goal of this session is to bring awareness to the importance of the correct motion of the horse’s top-line, and that is, whatever the discipline of riding. The rider has to devote a special attention to this area, especially during the warm-up session.

Michel’s training and teaching methods grant importance to the horse fitness level, especially to the back muscles development. The spine and all the muscles that surround it, forms the main beam for the horse’s body. Only because of its correct motion, the horse is able to carry the rider’s weight and push with strength to walk, trot, canter, turn, jump and perform dressage airs….

The rider must assess any weakness, pain or blocking of energy that would affect the top-line -Assuming the rider has a good knowledge of the horse’s anatomy and a good feeling to be able to detect any problems. If one loves his/her horse, one must try hard to be attentive to the horse’s reactions in order to understand what will trigger some defensive reactions. For example, when such or such actions are made, or when the saddle is put on his back, when the girth is being tied. A horse, who bucks, bites, or kicks, is trying to get a message across.

To Michel, the most important condition for the correct motion of the horse’s back is the freedom of his neck. Michel explains why he advocates working the horse stretching his neck, especially when warming him up whether he is under saddle or on a lunge line. He also gives the rules to follow, in order to obtain the horse to flex his neck yet being friendly to his vertebrae.
This video displays a warm-up session taking place outdoor on a grass footing at Michel Robert’s yard.

How to stretch your horse's neck when under saddle

Résumé listing:

For Michel, stretching down your horse's neck is the best way to improve your horse's pushing force, hind legs engagement, and balance (...)

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

In this video, Michel explains how to stretch down the horse's neck when being ridden. We already talked in previous lessons about the importance of relieving the horse's back from any tension or blockage that could impede the correct motion of the entire body. For that, Michel recommends working on stretching the entire top-line of the horse. This kind of work is even more beneficial when practiced on a slopping footing as it boosts the horse's thrust and balance.

Progress:

In this session, Michel is teaching Lea who is riding Tosca. At first, Michel lunges Tosca, so the rider doesn't hold any reins. It enables the rider to work on her position and her ability to follow her mare's movements which in turn, should encourage the mare to stretch down her neck. Lea has to get used to the feeling of emptiness in front of her when the mare stretches her neck with her nose down to the ground, especially when going downhill. Michel gives her some tips to reach that goal.

Then, Lea picks-up her reins. The difficulties in getting a horse to stretch down his neck can come from the rider's attitude, but also from a bit that is too severe. To solve this issue, Michel uses a bit made with leather. Much softer than a metal bit, this leather bit encourages horses to take the contact and stretch their nose toward the ground.

Michel teaches Lea how to find the solution and get her mare to stretch down her neck by alternating taking and releasing periods. By the end of the lesson, the goal is reached. Then, Lea will need to keep practicing and make it a routine.

Stretching the horse's neck is not an end in itself, but rather an efficient way to improve the horse's pushing power, hind legs engagement, and balance.

Lesson:

To remember :

-The main limitation for a horse to stretch the neck down is the rider's attitude, especially the rider's hand that will jab the mouth each time the horse tries to stretch.
-In order to follow the movement of your horse's neck when he stretches down, do not hesitate to amplify the release with your hands and up to your shoulders.
-Be aware of your outside rein that has a tendency to block the movement of your horse's shoulders.
-Stretching a horse's neck is obtained by a subtle game between comfortable and uncomfortable positions.
-Relieve the constraint to the lesser movement towards the beginning of a stretch.
-Sharp turns are of a big help as it creates some constraints for the horse with almost no influence from the rider.
