How to improve your straightness, relaxation and suppleness…This topic is developed by Veronique Bartin, horse rider and instructor of the Alexander program, through of a series of small exercises to practise a few minutes before getting in the saddle.

Niveau de difficulté:
Débutant
Goal:

Veronique Bartin, horse rider instructor of the Alexander program, will show you a series of small exercises to practise a few minutes before getting in the saddle.
As Michel Robert says:
“Riders don’t pay enough attention to their physical fitness. However, we know that the rider’s stiffness, muscle or joint tightness have a direct impact on the horse. The slightest tension in an arm, the hips, or even an ankle…will impact directly the horse’s motion and his freedom of movement. If we require our horse to be supple and loosened, let’s start with the same level of demand for ourselves. To become supple and fit doesn’t require the same training as a high level professional athlete, so everyone can do it.

Practising a few progressive and simple suppleness exercises is already a good start. When you start your riding session, it seems obvious to you to warm up your horse before any serious work. So why to not do the same with our own bodies before getting in the saddle?

That’s what Veronique shows us today in this video with a few simple yet progressive exercises to practise every day. It will take you only a few minutes but it will save you some time in your riding practice.
We are going to learn how to get each part of our body straighter, more relaxed and supple with this very simple set of exercises to be practised standing up in the barn near your horse with no accessories or a dedicated space.

Progress:

We are going to start by releasing the tension from the upper body: the neck, shoulders and arms. It is important as it will help the rider not only to improve the use of the eyes as an aid, but also to increase the elasticity of the arms thus to get a softer and more consistent connection with the horse’s mouth.
Veronique will then show us how to supple the low back and hips. This excellent gymnastic will help you in following the horse’s movements whatever the gait and while jumping.
We close the session by stretching the spine and the entire body. At the end, Veronique will feel that her legs are well grounded, her back is longer and her arms are looser. Each part of her body is loose.
There, she is ready to ride Phragy…who didn’t hesitate to tell us what he thought about it during this session.
Your turn to have some fun!

Accuracy of the track and suppleness of the horse – Step 2

Résumé listing:

This second part of the exercise is to be done at a canter with a horse well-schooled and responding perfectly to the leg and hand aids. The rider will have to be demanding to be in a perfect control of the 4 feet of the horse.

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

his second part of the exercise is quite difficult and can be achieved only if both the rider and horse master it at the walk and the trot. This is the reason why the rider has to take his time to practise the exercise and can practise it over several sessions. To be successful practising the exercise at a canter, the horse needs to be available and the rider needs to anticipate and plan ahead correctly.  The goal is to keep some light and discreet aids. Therefore if the rider has to flail, twist himself, pull or push, or even if he needs to use strength, there is no point in practising this exercise yet. So it is necessary to achieve one step at a time at the lower gaits before trying it at the canter.

This exercise is linked to the sheet A7 of the Training Program 1

Progress:

Michel recommends to start with the most comfortable side for the horse.  As seen in the first part of the exercise at a walk and trot, the rider has to be active on the right and then his left side staying centred and symmetrical in his position.

Michel offers some modifications of the set-up to make the first few practices easier and to gather some positive results before increasing the level of difficulty.

Michel gives us also an insight on the mind set we are looking for in the horse and the rider to reach the maximum relaxation while keeping the canter rhythm steady.

At the end, you will notice how comprehensive this exercise is. It will take you a certain time to get it, but you will definitively notice the progress you and your horse will make. Practise well!

Accuracy of the track and suppleness of the horse - Step 1

Résumé listing:

An excellent exercise to test the precision and lightness of the rider’s aids while working on the submission and the suppleness of the horse.

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

We know that horses and riders are all, more or less, asymmetrical: more supple to the right, stiffer to the left for example. It is important to be aware of it as it can affect the correct execution of a movement such as the accuracy of the track. The rider has to aim for a symmetric position and some symmetric aids to avoid confusing and misusing the horse. This is what Michel’s new exercise is intended for. The set-up is extremely easy but it proves to be very effective to challenge the rider’s ability to keep his horse on a precise track. The goal is to direct the horse with almost no hand aid, but simply with the position and a few discrete leg influence. To successfully execute this exercise, the rider has to be able to plan ahead each phase of this exercise.

This exercise is linked to the sheet A7 of the Training Program 1

Progress:

In this first part of the exercise, Michel starts at a walk and a trot. The canter work will be in a follow-up video. This same work at a canter requires the horse and rider to master perfectly the exercise at the lower gaits.

Michel emphasizes on the requirement necessary for the rider to stay present mentally and physically at all times. He explains how the rider should use his leg aid to obtain the best result with a minimum of influence on the horse.

The rider will be able to put the advice into action in any situation and it will allow him to direct his horse with lightness.

This exercise is also a good suppleness exercise for the horse who will have to work his left side as much as his right side to stay on the track chosen by the rider.

How to teach a young horse to rein back

Résumé listing:

To Michel, it is important that any horse know how to rein-back as this will improve their propulsion and also help them better utilise their body, making them more responsive to training.

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

According to Michel, it is essential that horses know how to rein-back. It is a good suppleness exercise which gives the horse awareness of his whole body and particularly his hind quarter. Frequently horses have a hard time to connect their front end to their hind end. It is even truer with young horses who focus more on their front end that their hind end. The rein-back is a good solution to solve this issue as it asks the horse to use the hind-leg joints while increasing the energy flow along the horse’s spine. Therefore, the rein-back is an excellent exercise to improve the horse’s pushing power and the suppleness of his back.

However, the rein-back will only benefit your horse if it is correctly performed. Unfortunately, too many riders force the rein-back by leaning back and pulling on their horse’s mouth, and this is counter-productive.

Progress:

In this lesson, Michel demonstrates the ideal rider’s position as well as the different steps of teaching the rein-back, keeping in mind, of course, the horse’s wellness. For this session, Michel chose to ride Bounty, a young mare, a four-year-old who was started under saddle only a few weeks ago.

It’s the first time for Michel on this mare and today’s training goal is to help her understand the rein-back movement starting first on the ground and then under saddle. Once again, we can see how Michel’s training method brings fast results but insures that the mare remains calm and understands the exercise.

Alice’s horse is overwhelmed as it’s his first time working in a field. Open spaces, other horses around, news jumps ….all are excuses for him to express his joy!

4 videos - Total time: 30 mn

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

Alice came to stay a few days for a clinic at Michel Robert’s yard. The first videos show Alice’s preliminary flat work lessons. Alice’s horse is overwhelmed as it’s his first time working in a field. Open spaces, other horses around, news jumps ….all are excuses for him to express his joy! During this lesson, Michel will emphasise on the body position and mind-set the rider needs to adopt, in order to deal with her horse’s emotions, while working him with no excessive constraints. This lesson will show you that it’s possible to control a high energy level horse without any rein-aids or other kind of coercive methods which can ruin the horse’s mind and body.

Progress:

This lesson is divided in 4 videos;

. Some primary advice to deal with the attitude of a horse who is worried or hot.

. An exercise that will make Alice work on her position when turning and on straight lines.

. Improving Alice’s position and her body movements during the up and down transitions.

. A first ground pole course to evaluate if the rider will be able to control her horse over a course.

Improving the rider’s jumping position: part 3

Résumé listing:

How to control and frame your horse approaching and landing fences by improving your position.

3 videos - Total time : 18 mn

Niveau de difficulté:
Intermédiaire
Goal:

During the preliminary flat work session, Alice was able to get in control of her horse thanks to Michel's advice.

However, her horse, Pharaon, still has a lot of energy, and gets excited around jumps. This kind of behaviour is most of the time reinforced by the rider’s physical and mind sets. The goal of this session is to channel this overflow of energy by riding with a position close to what Michel calls the perfect position.  Michel noticed that Alice has a good position approaching fences but gets unbalanced over the fence: her hips move backwards and her legs forward…which results into a loss of control on landing. Michel will give her some tips that will help her maintain a good position before, over and after the jump.

Progress:

The jumping session starts with a set of cavalettis. Alice has to keep focusing on her position even if it means to let her horse speeding up for now. The priority is for the rider to be able to follow the movement over the jump without getting off balance nor interfering with her horse’s movement.

The next exercise targets Alice’s position during the landing phase. It will help her absorb the jump using the motion of her joints -hips, knees, ankles.

Michel stresses the importance for the rider to stay as symmetrical as possible on either side of her horse’s axis. The right side stays to the right of the horse, and the left side to his left.

The session ends with jumping different profiles of natural fences: a bank, few verticals made with some logs. Once again, Alice has to stay focused on her position in order to be ready to cope with any situation.
